    1. The secrecy and denial grew out of, first, the shaming of the women and girls sent to those places to bear those children, and second, the corrupting effect of that shaming on the shamers, they were infected by the shame they inflicted on both the mothers and the children. The institutions, from the local to the Vatican kept the secrets out of shame denied.
