Call Your MoC about Aide to Puerto Rico for the Week of Sunday 26 January 2020

Calico Jack – Congress needs to be told to do right by Puerto Rico.

The Psy of Life

For more than a month now, Puerto Rico has been experiencing daily earthquakes — please note that tremors are just small earthquakes. The latest one was a 5.0 magnitude quake that occurred Saturday. The seismic activity began on 28 December and the worst was a 6.4 magnitude quake that occurred on 7 January.

The series of quakes have caused more than $110 million in damage and left more than 8,000 people without shelter. In addition, the island has been experiencing flash floods. On Friday, people were forced out of temporary shelters due to the heavy rains, for example. Since the island still hasn’t recovered from Hurricane Maria, suffice it to say, they are going through some things.

You might recall that Hurricane Maria was in 2017 more than two years ago. Part of the slow recovery has been the…

Can this man save American democracy?

LuckyOtter – The argument well stated

Lucky Otters Haven

Here, right matters. The truth matters. Otherwise, we are lost.
–Adam Schiff

America is anything but great again. It was great before. Not perfect by any means, but still a country other countries admired and tried to emulate. A country of unlimited opportunity others dreamed of making a new life in.

It no longer is a place the world looks up to, and in fact, leaders of advanced democracies think we’ve gone nuts. And they are right.

In three years, America has transformed into a nation riddled with hatred, racism, corrupt politicians (almost all Republicans), violence, intolerance for diversity, and worst of all, a nation standing on the precipice of fascism. If Republican senators vote to acquit Trump (even though they must know he’s guilty), democracy here is dead.

One man gives me hope. While he’s (of course) vilified by Trump and his conscienceless, corrupt cronies, Adam Schiff understands the…

Just-the-Facts-Maam

I’m old enough to remember the days when the news was simply the news and the  various networks and other outlets didn’t differ much or at all in what they reported, only slightly in style.   Reporters were mostly emotionally detached and broadcasted the events of the day without much partisan opinion or editorializing.  When they did, an opposing viewpoint would always be presented.     Sure, mainstream news back then could be boring and dry.  Opinion is  based on emotion, and an emotional, sensationalized delivery of the news is more enticing and sells better than the reciting of facts.   Old-school reporters and anchors were well respected even though they never were considered celebrities.

Until the 1980s, American mainstream news was for the most part “fair and balanced,” with only actual facts delivered or both sides given airtime when an issue was politically controversial.  …

Fire

Christine Ray – Fire – desire -anticipation

Brave & Reckless

The sheets with tiny pink rosebuds, incongruously innocent, are tangled beneath us. Your lips travel slowly down from my earlobe to my neck, marking your territory. You stop at my collarbone; nipping it gently with your teeth before lifting your head to look at me.

Our shirts are lost somewhere on the floor, my bra discarded on the bed along with our socks. Jeans and underwear create the only barrier that separates us from each other’s skin. I want to know your skin as well as I know my own. Every scar, every freckle, every tattoo, every perfect imperfection.

Your hair is damp with sweat as you balance above me. Your eyes are dark, intense, questioning. I involuntarily bite my lip. I am already anticipating your fingers deftly unbuttoning, unzipping, removing the obstacles. You take me out of my always busy head, reminding me that I am flesh, I am…

MEME: Putin has bought the Republican Party

Calico Jack – Bought and paid for

The Psy of Life

Putin has figured out how to defeat liberal democracies! I’m sure he’s kicking himself for not having realized it earlier because it is just that fucking simple.

He uses capitalism against us. He buys our politicians. It is that simple. Look at the Republican Party! How many pundits and members of the media profess abject confusion and consternation about the behavior of the Republican Party? When will they get a backbone? they lament. Where is the patriotism of the Republican Party? they wonder.

They won’t. Putin has sold them on the idea of an oligarchy just like they have in Russia!

  • Fixed elections! They’ll never lose another election because of gerrymandering, voter suppression, structural advantages in the Senate and electoral college, and foreign interference.
  • Fixed courts! They’ll never have another law overturned by a judge because they’ve packed the courts with their radically incompetent judges. And, they stole a SCOTUS…

Written in 2014, Originally published on Brave and Reckless on December 6, 2017

I have been thinking a great deal this holiday season about my first year of social work school. As incoming students, we were asked to fill out a skill and interest form to help match us with our year-long field placement. I was horrified when I received a letter halfway through the summer informing me that I had been placed with a mental health unit in the Philadelphia County Jail System. I assumed that it was a clerical error and called the school convinced that some incoming student who had wanted to be placed in the prison system who was equally upset that they had been placed with an HIV/AIDS agency. I was stunned when the Director of Field Placement told me that there had been no mistake and that I had been placed in the prison…

The Psychology of Trump’s 2020 Presidential Campaign

Calico Jack – How it works

The Psy of Life

We’ve long known that frightened people tend to vote conservative; thus, the outside demagoguery in conservative campaigns. We also known that white was the original identity politics because group identity and threats against that identity drive people to act in very predictable ways.

Psychological threat is the key to understanding the Ol’ Pussy Grabber’s appeal to the rank and vile rural Christian white voter. As the threats to identity are ratcheted up, people react along two lines:

  1. They take steps to regain control over their lives.
  2. They take steps to prove to themselves that they have moral worth.

As we explore the effects of psychological threat, we’ll see how each explains some of the weirdest most destructive and polarizing behavior of folks identifying with the right.

Psychological Threat

Psychological threat is the behaviors and mental processes that result from experiencing fear and anxiety concerning…
