A WILD WINTER SWAN – Georgiann Carlson

Our past is not always visible in the present.

Brave & Reckless

She was admired by everyone
a wild winter swan
perfect in every way
the whitest feathers
the most graceful bearing
wings fit for a god
the young ones
hypnotized by her elegance
swam behind her
following in her wake
then one day
she turned and said
I’m not who you think I am
the young swans were confused
I wasn’t always beautiful
filled with grace and agility
you look at me and see what you wish to see
in fact
she said
shaking her wings
I was once the Ugly Duckling
mocked and tormented by others
because I was not beautiful
or graceful
because I did not fit in
so I learned to look deeply into others
searching for kindness
and goodness
because white feathers don’t matter
but an open heart does
then she turned away
and continued swimming
